The Comic

Some thousand miles up north from Tistow, in the harsh wilds dominated by long dark winters, live the nomadic Fjoldi. They're skilled craftsmen, herders, hunters and fishermen. Despite attempts from the main land's missionaries to turn their faith, they continue to worship a myriad number of spirits and are lead by the shaman of the tribe. Jáhko and Veeti are just two of the many children born to this way of life.

The story will take Jáhko and Veeti on fantastical adventures to the nearby woods, helping fairies build houses, outwitting monsters, gathering seeds with trolls and helping wisps grow saplings. Under the guidance from Jáhko's grandmother and the woodland spirits the boys will learn the ways of the shaman and to respect nature.

The Authors

Hello ‘ello!

Hello! My name is Elli. I’m a 29-year-old self-employed illustrator originally from Finland, living in the United Kingdom since 2009. I'm part Sápmi from my mother's side and the other side of the family are from all over Finland. This means I travel. A lot.

I'm a huge fan of all things Victorian and Georgian. My favourite writers include Terry Pratchett, Henry Mayhew and Charles Dickens. Out of my favourite artists, Paul Kidby, Gustave Doré and the Himekawa team have influenced my works the most. I enjoy games of all sorts, my favourites being the Zelda series, Fallout and World of Warcraft where I have consumed an awful lot of my time.

I also keep a mischief of rats, 13 of them to be exact, all named after disreputable characters from Twist and Discworld.

My role in this collaboration:
Script & storyboard
Website coding

Karoliina here, or Karo for short. I was born on 1993 in the very heartland of Finland, and frankly, I've never gone much further from there!

I'm a Japanese RPG-enthusiast, which led me to want to write, illustrate, and craft stories heavily influenced by many classic JRPG series, such as Final Fantasy and Shin Megami Tensei. From there I developed an interest in game development and 3D-graphics in videogames, which I'd like to make a career out of. I have previously worked on a Steam Greenlit title as a character designer and technical artist.

I'm currently working on my own comic project Year In Hereafter and as a freelance artist/illustrator.

My role in this collaboration:
Panelling & storyboard
Website design

We also have a huge number of other people helping us work out different bits and pieces in the story!

Big thanks to Rats (an actual person, not a rat) who proofreads everything Tistow related and gives us an enormous amount of input on storyboarding and who isn't afraid to give us critique. You're a star.

Thank you to Elli's dear sisters Reetta & Máret, for being our hugely informative contacts in the Sápmi. Lorena, Red and Flynn for your encouragement through some pretty difficult moments.

Cheers to Holly, Jaki, Mikey, Koto-wari, Seshire, Holden, Lauren, Helen, Chris for beta reading, red lining and huge amounts of other different kinds of advice you've given us on our journey.

Can I hire you to build a website or draw a comic for me?
Yes! We'd be more than happy to help you. Please drop a line to elli.puukangas[at]gmail[dot]com. Please kindly note that there is a fee involved.

What're these character trades that have been mentioned?
Think of it like a tabletop roleplaying game. The creator is responsible for the key elements of the story and the final outcome, but other creators help mould the story by contributing towards the events with their characters.

The Veeti you see in Small Trolls and Tistow, his core character originates from Karoliina's story Year in Hereafter and the Jaakko you've met in YIH originates from Tistow's own Jack.

These two are however not the only character trades we've done but definitely the most visible examples. You'll get to meet lots of other traded characters in Tistow and YIH from other webcomics and you can expect that Jack and Veeti among other characters will (and already have!) make an appearance elsewhere. We'll make sure to let you know when and where!
(Liar's Dice and Bookwyrms might be a good place to start..)

Will you include my OC in your story?
We only accept characters from creators who have made significant contributions towards our stories and vice versa. By contributions we mean reference material, storyboarding, thumbnailing, proof reading and red lining.

How long will Small Trolls be?
We've estimated it to run for at least 200 pages. It'll be broken into several small stories, most of them which are around 20-25 pages long.
